Over the course of 3 weeks, we will release various webinars, virtual classroom sessions, educational and informative videos, and articles to ensure that participants receive a plethora of avenues to acquire the intended knowledge. Civil society leaders and industry experts within the fields of civic engagement, communications, leadership, and future technology have been onboarded to provide the content for the program. These pioneers with years of industry experience will share their wisdom through valuable lesson plans. YSEALI hopes to bring a meaningful experience that successfully accomplishes the intended outcomes from a physical boot camp by using cutting edge digital technology within the fields of education.

The success of the first phase of Boot Camps has assured us of the existence of many determined and driven youth members across Malaysia. We are excited for the upcoming 3-day extensive Boot Camp which will accelerate your campaigns onto a national level!

Due to health concerns, we have decided to postpone the date of the YSEALI Boot Camp 2020 from April 10th-12th, to a later date, tentatively either July or August, depending on the progression of the Covid-19 virus.

The aim of the program has always been to find aspiring leaders within Malaysia and provide them with the opportunities and resources to become national civic leaders through self-implemented campaigns that would be run across Malaysia to tackle pressing community issues. Although the YSEALI Boot Camp 2020 has been postponed to a later date, we ensure that the same quality of opportunities, if not better, will be provided during the future date! Passionate candidates will receive a network of digital tools, resources, expertise and mentorship in bringing upon civic change within their communities, Malaysia and the world.

Sparking Digital Action

The changes in society brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic have allowed the YSEALI team to explore digital mediums to bring the same content and opportunities through safer means. Passionate individuals will still be able to apply in teams of 2-4 to attend the 3 week-long virtual Boot Camp on civic engagement and leadership. Industry pioneers and leaders well versed in civic engagement will run a series of digital lessons to equip young leaders with the know-how to launch their own civic engagement campaigns.

Agenda

Week 1: “Becoming an empathetic problem solver”

The first week will focus on unifying the teams and making sure every member is aware of his or her role and of the overall vision and mission of the team. Project management tools will be introduced to help streamline internal communication and workflow, ensuring efficiency among the team. We will then venture into the minds of those facing the issues the teams aim to bring to light. Empathizing with the stakeholders will allow you to design unique and innovative solutions that help your community. The aim is to set the groundwork to have all the tools and knowledge needed to run an effective campaign.

Week 2:  “Sparking Digital Movements”

The second week will be all about the art of storytelling! You will learn what it takes to create compelling campaigns through relevant social media platforms in Malaysia. Media communication skills are vital in the 21st century. Research often suggests that a compelling story can be more impactful than the product a brand is trying to sell. By using communication tools and software, you will learn how to market your campaign and generate the attention it deserves. Industry leaders producing various forms of content will provide valuable insights and anecdotes to make content creation more approachable. Their experience and success will speak to the importance that storytelling plays in gaining public support.

Week 3: “The Final Test”

The final week will put everything you have learned to the test. You will be required to tell us your campaign story through a 1-minute video. You will also be required to pitch for 3 minutes and tell us why you deserve the funding to continue with your initiative to help you create meaningful impact within your community and the nation.

Application Criteria

  • Must have a stable internet connection to access all learning resources and to communicate with the team
  • Must have access to a laptop or a similar device that is able to access all learning resources and to  communicate with the team
  • All group members must be Malaysian citizens.
  • Teams must consist of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 members.
  • All team members must be YSEALI members (apply here) and ages 18-35 at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their university, place of work, and/or community.
  • Demonstrate interest, knowledge, or professional experience in the areas of Civic Engagement.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to or interest in community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
  • Individuals from underserved communities, including indigenous groups, women, and people with disabilities, are highly encouraged to apply.

1. What is YSEALI Boot camp 2020?

YSEALI (Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative), in conjunction with Me.reka, Biji-biji and the U.S. Embassy of Malaysia aim to incite new ideas and innovation in civic engagement. This 9-month initiative aims to empower a community of young leaders with the opportunities and necessary skills to become engaged and active leaders in Malaysia.

2. Is this program only for Malaysians?

Yes, this program is only open to Malaysian citizens.

3. What will the Boot Camp focus on?

This Civic Engagement capacity-building program targets youths across Malaysia who are passionate about creating change by engaging with decision-makers and implementing effective advocacy and lobbying campaigns. Some of the possible areas of advocacy are listed below, however, individuals are encouraged to campaign for any topic of concern about which they are passionate.
 
- Disability rights
- Gender equality
- Youth livelihoods and future skills
- Environmental issues
- Climate Action
- Mental Health
- Education reform
- Empowerment or social integration of marginalized youths (indigenous & rural youths, B40, refugees and other minorities)
- Other community-initiated, -led or -run initiatives that cover youth participation, youth empowerment, and youth protection

4. Why should I join this program?

The YSEALI program will equip you with valuable skills and knowledge to help you in beginning the journey of starting your own civic campaign. You will also learn life-long skills to help market your cause. Plus, you will be meeting like-minded young people who are passionate about creating change in Malaysia too.

5. What is the commitment required to participate? How long do I have to participate?

By applying you agree to fully participate for all three days of the Boot Camp. This 3-week Boot Camp program will cover advocacy, campaign management, media communication, impact assessment and leadership to bring positive changes to communities.

6. What happens If my team’s campaign is one of the 5 winning teams?

You will be paired up with one of our content partners for a 3-month mentorship program and are required to implement your campaign for at least 3 months.

7. I don't live in KL, can I still come?

Yes! All Malaysian are welcome to apply, feel free to submit your application. Food, transport, and accommodation will be provided for participants from all states in Malaysia.

7. Does the YSEALI Boot Camp 2020 provide a cash prize?

Yes! The top 5 teams from Phase 2 of the 2020 Boot Camp will receive a grant of RM6,000 each from YSEALI to help build their ideas into sustainable initiatives.

8.  Do I have to participate in Phase 1 of the Boot Camp to win the grant?

Everyone will be given the chance to apply for Phase 2, but by joining the Phase 1 half-day boot camp, you will be equipped with valuable skills on how to start and implement your ideas as well as learn how to write grant proposals.

9. Do I get to pick my team members for the grant?

Yes! You have full control over who you want to be on your team. Your teammates are not required to have attended Phase 1 of the Boot Camp.
